Growing in the Community – Fairplay Charity Visit
The North American writer and teacher Margaret Wheatley (no proven link yet to our very own Wheatley Farm) once famously said, “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” Here at the Mushroom Emporium, we are not just Derbyshire proud, we are also incredibly proud to play our part in fostering and helping to grow local community spirit.
When Fairplay, a Chesterfield-based charity that supports children and young people with disabilities and additional needs and their families across North Derbyshire, approached us for some free compost, we jumped at the chance to give them these wonderful characters an education into mushroom growing, a guided tour of the farm and of course, some of our mushroom grow kits so they can enjoy and learn more about the wonderful world of mushroom growing.
Supporting more than 400 families across Derbyshire, Fairplay does an amazing job of helping children and young adults with disabilities, and we couldn’t have been more delighted to help them in their education, learning, and development.
Our founder, Robin Schultz, led the eager folks around the farm on Thursday, June 13th, answering questions and explaining how the mushroom-growing process works. With Fairplay already leading a horticultural program, the Mushroom Emporium compost will help boost their growing activities. The gifts of the fungi farm boxes—our famous mushroom grow kits—will enhance their growing knowledge and experience and provide some of the tastiest Sky Blue Oysters and Lion’s Mane Mushrooms they will have ever eaten!
So Much Fun(gi)
The team at FairPlay is caring and thoughtful, and it shows. Each of the lads was so excited about their project and so happy with what they had achieved so far that they proudly pointed out their handy work on the vegetable garden and sensory garden on staff member Kelly’s phone.
We hope the folks at Fairplay enjoyed the visit as much as Robin did, and we look forward to helping them and others in the community in the future!
